How much spending money should I take to Italy?

I see many people asking this question and the answer is not simple. There are many factors you may consider, for example where are you staying, where are you gonna eat, how many days are you staying and what you want to do.

So let's try to figure out how much spending money you'll need to take with you in your Italian vacation:

Accomodation in Italy

There are many option for you to choose.

Hostels: maybe the cheapest accommodation all over the world, Italy has plenty of hostels. They usually provide a room and breakfast (but not always so make sure to ask before booking!) but during the day they may close for a few hours, generally starting from 2 p.m. and opening in the evening.

They are cheap, and the most common room is a dorm that may be mixed, only male or only female. They usually have some single or double rooms but they will cost more and the bathroom is almost always shared.

So, the basic stuff you need for an affordable price. They have lockers and free internet but they not always provide sheets; however they often have a laundry.

Some hostels have kitchens which is very useful. That means you can buy groceries and cook yourself a meal instead of spending a lot eating in a restaurant.

A room in a mixed dorm can costs from 15 to 21 euros generally. Some good sites to look for a hostel in Italy are www.hostelworld.com www.hostelbookers.com www.venere.com

B&B: similar to hostels they are cheap but a bit more expensive than hostels because they usually are run by families and have few rooms.

Breakfast is included (but not always so make sure to ask before booking!). They usually have free internet and lockers.

A room can start from 45 euros to 100 or more, depending on location, quality and city. You can look for some b&b here www.hostelworld.com www.hostelbookers.com www.venere.com

Hotels: More expensive than b&b and hostels depending on how many stars they have. They have single or double rooms and rooms for families, usually breakfast and one meal are included, they have extra services than b&b and hostels like sheets, a daily cleaning service, towels, TV and air conditioning, soap and shampoo, room service.

Rooms price can start from 60 euros depending on location, stars, city, and season.

Agriturismo: This accommodation is usually expensive and it's located in the countryside, so it's better to have a car.

Tuscany is famous for its agriturismos that are usually old farmhouses renovated to be a luxury accommodation. All comforts are often included and usually you can taste food or wine produced by the owners.

Where to eat in Italy?

 There are plenty of choices:

Kebab stands: In the past few years kebab has grown common. With 4 or 5 euros you can eat a delicious kebab with ingredients of your choice and a drink. Some of them also sells french fries or some other dish like rice and meat. The best choice if you like ethnic food and you are rushing!

Cafes: In the main cities, cafes (called "bar") offer not only cappuccino, espersso and sandwiches but often complete meals: pasta, meat, salads or pizza.

They usually have menu for tourists with a first or second dish, side, drink and coffe starting from around 7 euros. Sandwiches have prices from 4 euros and they are the best option if you don't have much time to visit the city.

Restaurants: A bit more expensive than cafes, sometimes they have some tourist menu. Some restaurant may charge the "coperto" which is basically the seat and cutlery, usually 3 or 4 euros per person.

Make sure to don't order anything if the price isn't in the menu, always ask for the price especially in busy touristic cities.

Tips aren't common in Italy but these past few years, especially in the big cities, tourists had been tipping the waiters or hotel receptionists so they are kind of used to tips. There isn't a fixed amount though and no one can asks you for a tip.

How much will i spend for souvenirs in Italy?

Well, it depends on what souvenirs are you gonna buy. In every touristic city there are replicas of the main monuments like the Coliseum in Rome or the leaning tower in Pisa (is very common to see every Italian main monument in every city though) and the price depends on the dimension.

Can range from 5 to 20 euros. You can also buy decorative plates, t-shirts, aprons... Then every city has his typical souvenirs like masks or gondolas in Venice for example or leather goods in Florence.

If you want to buy some typical olive oil, or balsamic vinegar it gonna cost a bit.

City Cards

Depending on how many days are you gonna stay in a city, you may want to buy a tourist card. The main cities have one and buying one allows you to visits museums, use public transportation and have discounts in restaurants or events. Here some links with information on City Cards:
