How to buy train tickets in Italy on self service machines

Too much people buying a ticket and you can't wait in line at the ticket office or ticket counter? Use one of the self service ticket machines. they are very easy to use, let see how.

This is one of the self service ticket machines. As you see above, in the the white space it tells you which credit cards you can pay with. Some machine are for cash only, others for credit cards only and it is alwasy specified in the white space. Usually are found in bigger station. This one works with both.

 Choose your language

Choose the "buy your ticket" option.

This window will appear letting you know which types of payment are available

 Press "buy your ticket" option

I was in Castelfiorentino so it was my default departure station. If you are in Florence the default departure station will be Florence, but you can modify that and buy ticket for other cities by pressing the "modify departure" button, in the top right part of the screen.

Then type your arrival station or choose one between the suggestions. Here we have Certaldo, Empoli, Firenze, Poggibonsi or Siena

Then a window with departing hours and costs will appear. Choose the time you want leave at and press select. The hour is not important for regional trains as the ticket is valid for every hour for 60 days if not validated.

Choose for how many person the ticket will be for

You can choose up to 6 persons. Be careful, choosing 6 it means that the machine will give you a single ticket valid for 6 persons and not 6 individual tickets. So if you want to leave in different hours don't do this. Also 6 person doesn't mean 3 round-trip tickets. There will be an option for buying your return ticket after pressing forward

 Confirm by pressing "forward"

And now you can choose to buy a return ticket that it will be automatically set for the two train station of leaving and arrival.

A warning telling you that your ticket is valid, if not validated, for 60 days. Press continue

Now a voice will tell you to insert your credit card or money. Buon viaggio!

Ticket Validation:

Before catching a train be sure to ALWAYS validate your ticket with the machines in the train station (even the smallest stations have them). They are white and green or, the oldest one, yellow. If you don't validate your ticket the controllore will give you a fine, usually from 5 to 40 euros. So be careful. If you are in a hurry and you can't validate your ticket or if you forgot to do that, be sure to look for a controllore as soon as you get on the train and tell him. He will validate the ticket and you won't have to pay the fine.
