Carnival in Italy - Viareggio

papier-maché sculputures during Viareggio Carnival
The carnival is approaching, that's the opportunity to visit Carnevale di Viareggio, one of the most famous carnivals in Italy and Europe. Born in 1873, it brings in the streets floats and papier-maché representing showmen and politicians.

You can visit the Cittadella, where the floats are made. It is a huge square with 16 warehouses, a restaurant and a carnival museum, the Carnevalotto Museum for contemporary art where the story of the Carnevale di Viareggio is documented by original documents and where you can find sketches, posters miniatures and stands where is explained how papier-maché sculptures are done . This is an important square in Viareggio not only for the carnival: during summertime many concerts and shows take place here.
This year the celebrations start on February 15th with the Opening Ceremony and will end on march 9th when it will be celebrated the 400th  parade of the carnival, the winners will be announced and there will be the closing with great fireworks. To buy a ticket go to the official site of Carnival of Viareggio.
