Best beaches in Italy

Pink Beach, SardiniaItaly is famous not only for its art and food but also for its beaches. Being a peninsula here are many all over the country, but which are the best?
I'll try to make a list of the Italian beaches awarded with the Blue Flag program eco-label. What's the blue flag program? I'ts a program that works towards a sustainable development of beaches and awards more than 4000 beaches and marina in 48 countries considering many criteria such as water quality, environmental education and information, environmental management, and safety and other services such as wheelchair access or cycle paths.

I will start with Sardinia where, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful beaches are.

La Maddalena is a municipality that consist of an archipelago of 7 islands. It is a famous tourist destination and there, besides the beach, you can see the geomarine park La Maddalena National Park and the house and tomb of the Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi.
It is also famous for its pink beach, called like that because of the color of the sand. You can reach the isles with a ferry from the town of  Palau, a town where there are also many beautiful beaches. Another beach it worth a visit but is not a Blue Flag is La Pelosa Beach in the Stintino municipality located in the north-west point of Sardinia. It is characterized by its white sand and turquoise water.

Emilia Romagna:
This region is very famous not only for its beaches but also for its nightlife. People from all over Italy and all over the world come here every year to enjoy the sun and the nightlife. Near the coast there are plenty of beautiful beaches, bar restaurants and especially discos and aqua-parks. The most famous beaches are the one in Riccione and Cesenatico.

Now Sicily, another famous location with wonderful beaches.
In the towns of Ispica, Pozzallo e Pachino there are many beaches. In Ispica you can also visit the Archaeological Park and St. Mark's Catacomb. In Pachino too there are many archaeological sites, especially grottoes. A no Blue Flag beach is Rabbit Island (l'isola dei conigli) near Lampedusa. You can reach Rabbit Island from Lampedusa by walking into the sea, as there is a submerged path of sand (isthmus) on a depht between 30 and 150 cm.

Apulia:
A famous town in this region is Ostuni, also known as the white town, not only famous for its Baroque architecture, archaeological sites and dolmens but also for its beautiful beach. From the city you can appriciate a wonderful view over the sea.
Polignano a mare where you can visit sea grotto and enjoy the unique beach! A no Blue Flag beach is Punta della Suina so beautiful that it's called the Italian Caribbean.

Tuscany:

Being Tuscany a region rich of art, history and culture also the towns near the beach are not only a place to relax and enjoy the sun and the sea but also are worth visiting. The most famous beaches are found in Castiglione della Pescaia, Forte dei Marmi, Viareggio and Rosignano Marittimo. Another no Blue Flag beach very famous in Tuscany is Fetovia, a beach in Elba island. It forms a little peninsula and the view is amazing!

Liguria:
Finale ligure, Lerici and Varazze are the most famous beaches in this region. Blue sea, nightlife but also history and art!

Lazio:
If you are visiting Rome and you want to spend the week end to the beach, try Anzio or Gaeta where you can find beautiful beaches and grottoes.

Some of the beaches are easily reachable with public means of transportation but some others are only reachable by car. Hope you enjoyed this little list and comment if you have any request or suggestion!
