Hello everybody! Today, as I promised in my last post, an itinerary to visit another famous Italian city, Bologna in just one day.
As always i'll start from the train station from where you can easily reach the Parco Montagnola, built in the 17th century which hosts a big market every Friday and Saturday. This market is one of the more ancient markets in the Emilia Romagna region and you can find more information in the official site.
Proceed in via dell'Indipendenza, then turn left in via Righi and take via Piella. Before reaching via Marsala you will notice a little window (finestrella) from which you can admire a little canal, one of the ones remained after the WWII. This is known as the finestrella di via Piella (little window on Piella street) and this spot is known as "little Venice". That's a gem not everyone knows about this city.
Take now via Oberdan and reach the famous medieval towers of Bologna, the symbol of the city. The 2 tallest towers are simply called "the two towers" but in the past their number was around 180.
You can only visit the tallest one, Torre degli Asinelli, with a 3 euros ticket and the tour lasts about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Take now via Rizzoli then via Re Enzo and reach Piazza Maggiore, the main square of the city, created in the 15th century. You can admire the San Petronio Basilica the main church of Bologna, built around 1390. Inside you can see a "Madonna with saints" and a "Pietà ". Around the square there are many buildings like Palazzo dei Notai, built in 1381, Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo dei Banchi.
Near Piazza Maggiore there is a little square, Piazza Nettuno, where there is the Fountain of Neptune, a fountain with a a bronze sculpture of Neptune built by Giambologna in 1565.
Another characteristic of Bologna, besides the towers, are its porticoes built around 1200s, where you can stroll and see the many shops in the city center.
Bologna is also famous for its food, so I suggest you to use your time here also to enjoy the food! To know the typical dishes of Bologna see our previous post about an italian food itinerary!
Hope you enjoy!
