What to see in Pompeii in one day

Fresco in Villa dei misteri, PompeiiPompeii sure is a must see if you go to Italy. It's a town near Naples and you can reach it by train or by bus either from Sorrento or Naples in about 30 minutes with the circumvesuviana line. You will stop at "Pompei scavi - villa dei misteri" which is just in front of the archeological site.
From there is all walkable, although the floor is made of cobblestones and there is uneven ground so be careful when you walk. If you go during summer consider that there will be from 30 to 35 C° so make sure to bring a lot of water with you. What to see in Pompeii? Let's start!

Let's start with Villa dei Misteri which is a Roman villa covered by ashes during the eruption of the Vesuvio but it suffered minor damages so it's well preserved. You can admire its beautiful and colorful frescoes. As in other part of the city, here were found bodies covered in ashes and plaster-of-paris casts were made of them.
Then you can enter the ancient part of Pompeii where you can see the petrified bodies of the people who couldn't escape when the Vesuvio erupted and also find many buildings, for example the House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno), one of the largest private residence in Pompeii. It was built in the second century BC and it was named for the dancing bronze faun placed in front of it. The House of the Faun contains some beautiful mosaic including the Alexander Mosaic, depicting a battle with Alexander the Great and an erotic Satyr and the Nymph mosaic. The original artworks are preserved in the Naples museum but, like in any other art city, there are copies for tourists to see.

Then you can visit the Lupanar (Lupanare, meaning brothel), the largest of the brothels found in Pompeii with 10 rooms. You can see erotic painting on the walls and some graffiti carved in the walls left by the customers.
The Temple of Apollo is a temple dedicated to the Greek and Roman god of the sun Apollo and it is the town's most important religious building. Another temple you can find is the Temple of Jupiter, erected in the mid 2nd century BC.
Then there are the Forum Baths, an ancient spa divided into 2 areas for men and women. You can admire some frescoes of people in the spa.

All this attractions are in a single, large area and at the entrance you are given a free map and a booklet with some information so you can walk and visit what you want if you don't have a tourist guide. As I said before be sure to bring a lot of water if you visit Pompeii during summer and i suggest to bring some food too because inside the area there aren't any bar or restaurant and due to the very wide area it will take hours to visit and you'll get hungry.
Also be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes as you'll have to walk a lot on an uneven ground. Consider then that Pompeii is a small town and at night there isn't much to do. So if you want to have fun at night i suggest you to book your hotel in Naples.
