Things to see in Pisa besides the leaning tower

Leaning tower and Duomo of Pisa
Today I've prepared a walking tour for Pisa so you can visit this wonderful city in a day and you will discover the other treasures besides the leaning tower!

Let's start from the train station, walk to the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and go to Piazza Emanuele II where you will find the "Tuttomondo" mural by Keith Haring that he painted in 1989.

Go now to Corso Italia. It's one of the main streets where you can find lots of shops. On your right, in the same street, you can find Piazza del Carmine with the Santa Maria del Carmine Church. It was built in the 14th century but the façade was done in 1835. Near the door there are two niches, one on the left and one on the right, containing the statues of two saints. The inside has a Baroque style and there is a 1613 organ. Go ahead in the Via San Martino where you can see Le logge dei Banchi which used to host a market and it's still used for this purpose, especially during the Christmas holidays.

Go ahead and there is the Palazzo Gambacorti one of the most famous palaces of Pisa that now hosts the municipality. The façade is from 14th century and has a Gothic style, but there is another façade on the back of the 17th century.

Cross now Ponte di Mezzo and you will see Piazza Garibaldi, which will lead you in the heart of the city. Go in Borgo Stretto and see on your right the medieval San Michele in Borgo Church, built in 1016 over a ancient temple dedicated to Mars.

Keep walking in this this street full of shops until you rich Via San Lorenzo where you will find Piazza Martiri della Libertà, a beautiful square where you can rest and enjoy the shadow of the many trees in there. In front of the square there is the Santa Caterina's Church.

Go now to the famous Leaning tower which is a simple bell tower that became famous for its inclination. You can climb it now, but it was closed to the public from 1990 until 2001 because the inclination got worst and it was dangerous. After its upkeep, the inclination was reduced by 44 cm.

Near the leaning tower there are also the Duomo, built in 1063 in Romanic style, the Baptistery and theCemetery built in Gothic style. For more information about tickets and opening hours check the official site of Pisa.
Botanical garden of PisaAfter that go to Via Roma that will lead you to the Orto Botanico, a botanical garden operated by the University of Pisa and It is open weekday mornings without charge. Established in 1544 under Cosimo I de' Medici, it was the first university botanical garden in Europe.

Keep following Via Roma, cross the Ponte Solferino and you will be back to the train station.

Hope you enjoy Pisa!
